The
Poggio delle Civitelle farmhouse residence stands at 600 metres
above sea level overlooking a valley in the countryside just 7
kilometres from
Bevagna, surrounded by
400 hectares of olive groves
and woodland.
The name derives from a nearby
monastery known as “
delle Civitelle”,
which was occupied by Benedictine nuns until 1555 but that is now
ruined. Much of the mystic spirituality of the former monastery
survives in the main farm on the estate, however, with its main
house and small
Benedictine chapel consecrated to the Virgin.
The
Poggio delle Civitelle is spread over three sections. The
central building is a converted squire’s house that holds
15 rooms
and some
apartments. A
restaurant has been installed in what used to
be the house’s stables, which are flanked by a 12 x 6 x 50-metre
swimming pool. Roughly 400 metres from the main house stands the
estate’s former greenhouse and a number of outbuildings that have
been converted into
21 small flats. A series of
bungalows and an
artificial lake lie a little further into the estate, near the woods.
Services and facilities at the farmhouse residence include
restaurant and pizzeria reserved exclusively for guests and
run
personally by the owner of the estate, Mrs Antinori. The buffet
breakfast for guests of the farmhouse residence is served daily in
the restaurant. Other facilities available for guests include a bar,
swimming pool, table-tennis, a reading room from which guests are
welcome to borrow books including publications in English and German,
a children’s playground area, a 5-a-side football pitch, gardens for
picnics and barbecues. For an additional charge guests also have
access to the tennis court, which is lit for games at night, a
riding school and a mountain bike rental service.
The
rooms are decorated with handmade furniture and wrought iron
beds and all contain satellite colour TV, telephone, minibar,
private bathroom with shower. The rooms are all on the first two
floors of the main building, which does not possess a lift. Some
rooms have their own terrace and fine views.
