Via San
Francesco - Early 20th century |
|
The
Hotel " Il Palazzo " is located approximately halfway between
the Basilica of Saint Francis and Piazza del Comune. It occupies the left
wing of the Palazzo Bindangoli Bartocci, built in the 16th century,
planned by Giulio Danti. The palazzo, still inhabited by the descendants,
conserves at the first floor the central reception room with canvas
paintings embedded in the walls ("telari") with mythological
scenes by Antonio Nessi and the ceiling, as well as in the contiguous
rooms, has been distempered in the 18th century. The building rises on the
foundations of shops, inns and storage cellars ("fondachi") of
the 13th century.
From
the rooms on the front on the second floor you may admire the splendid
view on the Spoleto valley, delimited by the hills of Bettona and Perugia;
far on the horizon you may even see the Monte Amiata in Tuscany. The
centre of the valley is dominated by the huge dome of S. Maria degli
Angeli.
Breakfast
is served in a splendid hall from 7,30 until 9,00 o'clock or - on request
- in your room.
The rooms of the Hotel are all of different shapes and are fitted out with
simple antique furniture: some of the ceilings still have the original oak
or poplar beams.
